Now, discuss with your peers:
• Can machines really develop a consciousness?
• What if machines having their own values interact with humans?
• Can machines really think on their own? Can they develop habits?
• Can we influence machines to act? Can they say no?

Activity 8
Homes with intelligence!
We discussed your dream smart home in Chapter 1. But now, after having learnt
in depth about AI, let us revisit the activity with a new perspective:
1. Discuss what kind of Internet of Things (IoT) devices you can use to automate
the home processes in our daily lives (lighting, temperature, mood, music, etc.).
Imagine voice commands, screens on devices and other immersive experiences
such as Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality.
You should try to sketch the floor plan of the house (use CAD, Adobe, Paint or
such design tools) and draw where automation is done.
2. Discuss the concept of home automation with your classmates:
• Have you yourself used home automation like Nest, Alexa, etc? What devices
do you have at home?
• What is the benefit of using such devices?
• What are some of the hazards of using them?
• Do you think it is helpful for old people or people with special abilities?
• How is the user experience?
3. You know how most digital systems work, right? They all have inputs, model
and output. Now, think of home automation system in this manner:
• Input: What forms of inputs are given— text, voice, gestures, etc.
• Model: How is the input processed— Data, CV, NLP.
• Output: How is the output given. Do you know actuators? Read about them
